I wrote these songs for free (except, of course, “Lift Every Voice”). I sang & played them for free. Nathan Kilen played drums for free. Chauntee and Monique Ross sang, and played (respectively) the violin & cello, for free. They are called SistaStrings & you can find them around Milwaukee. John & Carrie Tanner donated time at their studio, Tanner Monagle, in Milwaukee. Ric Probst donated his time to engineer and mix. Jon Lamb & Neil Biondich donated their time for additional engineering. Kate Donaldson did the layout for free. Ben Hubbird of CD Baby & Chad Fondren of Disc Makers helped to get it made.

When I was little I learned “Lift Every Voice” at Saint Anne’s middle school, in my neighborhood on the Northwest side of Milwaukee. All of us on the playground had a typical, childish, & mercifully limited understanding of the invented concept of race. We all just sang the song. I’ve been working on understanding this terribly beautiful country since then, and will always continue.
